Small Changes To Enhance Your Fitness Regime

If you’ve been training for a while you may feel like you come to a bit of a plateau in your fitness journey which can be demoralising and demotivate you to exercise.

The fact is, the human body is very good at adapting to change and its default is to use its resources in the most efficient way by using the least amount of energy. Don’t worry though, we’ve got you covered with some tips and tricks to help you enhance your fitness routine.

Get comfortable with being uncomfortable

To keep your muscles on their toes you need to regularly progress your workouts. Add another rep or two, increase the weights you are using or try adding some completely new exercises to your routine to shock your muscles into working in a new way.

Train smarter, not longer

There’s no need to spend hours in the gym, simply go harder in your workouts and really push yourself to the max. HIIT training is great for those wanting to get a really intense workout but are stuck for time. Plus, this type of exercise is great for mixing up your routine if you are used to basic exercises such jogging on the treadmill or doing some weights.

Try a new fitness class

Your muscles adapt quickly to a routine if you’re doing the same kind of exercises again and again so you need to mix up your routine to keep your body and mind stimulated. Try a new class that pushes you out of your comfort zone.

Don’t over train

Training too much can sometimes have the opposite effect and will hinder your progression because you won’t be able to give every workout 100%. Overtraining can also cause injury so make sure you factor in some rest time to let your body recover.

Add de-load weeks

This is where you deliberately reduce the intensity of your workouts for a week to enable your body to recover and re-set. Perform moderate exercises such as yoga, pilates or swimming and use any available sauna or steam room facilities to relax your muscles. After a week, you should become re-energized and ready to get back at it!

Set new goals

If you’re regularly working out you should be hitting your goals so make sure you review them regularly. Make sure you include some exercise specific goals too such as, ‘be able to do 5 pull ups’ or ‘run for 15 minutes without stopping’. It will help keep your routine fresh and interesting.

If you still need an extra push why not enlist the help of a personal trainer? They will be able to help and advise on how you should be adapting your exercise routine plus it always helps if you have someone else there to give you an extra push!
