Nicky Twigg's journey in the world of sports and leisure is truly remarkable. From her early years, Nicky had a deep passion for athletics, participating in a variety of sports, including swimming and fencing. This passion propelled her into an international career, competing at both Junior and Senior levels in prestigious events like the World and Commonwealth Championships.
After finishing her education, Nicky naturally gravitated towards the leisure industry. She saw an opportunity to share her love for physical activity and teach valuable life skills to others. Thus began an incredible journey that has spanned nearly four decades, characterized by dedication, resilience, and a commitment to community wellness.
Her journey started in the summer of 1986 when she landed her first job at Rother Valley Country Park. There, she worked as a Summer Temp, operating rescue boats and managing customer hire—a role that laid the foundation for her future endeavors.
In October of the same year, Nicky joined Sheffield City Council, where she held various positions at Hurlfield Sports Centre, now known as Springs Leisure Centre. At Springs Leisure Centre, Nicky thrived, seizing opportunities to become a swimming teacher and acquire sports coaching qualifications, along with nationally recognized management credentials.
Through hard work and a thirst for knowledge, Nicky climbed the ranks, holding positions such as lifeguard multi-sites, Head Attendant, and eventually Facility Officer at Springs Leisure Centre. Her expertise extended beyond lifeguarding to coaching swimming lessons, leading group exercises, and teaching racket sports across the city.
A pivotal moment in Nicky's career came in 1991 when she was seconded to the World Student Games Team as Assistant Manager for Fencing—an experience that left a lasting impact. Working alongside seasoned professionals and participating in the Opening Ceremony at Don Valley Stadium were highlights of her career.
As Operations Manager at Springs Leisure Centre, Nicky oversaw transformative changes, including facility expansions and the introduction of gym and fitness studio offerings—a testament to her leadership and commitment to community well-being.
In 2011, Nicky transitioned to Sheffield City Trust, where she served as General Manager, overseeing operations across multiple venues. In her role as Community Venues General Manager, Nicky emphasized inclusivity and promoted health and wellness within the community.
In 2021, Nicky assumed the role of Head of Operations at Sheffield City Trust, where she oversees a portfolio of iconic national and international venues, embodying her dedication to advancing health and well-being in Sheffield.
Approaching 38 years in the leisure industry, Nicky looks back with gratitude at the memories and opportunities that have shaped her journey. Her story serves as an inspiration, encouraging others to pursue their passions and embrace a life filled with purpose and fulfillment.
